More about this artwork

This serene painting by Christen Købke captures a picturesque view of part of the Bay of Naples, with the famous Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. The canvas is suffused with soft, naturalistic light, imbuing the scene with a tranquil, almost ethereal quality. In the foreground, two rowboats tethered to the shore gently bob in the calm waters. The boats, one filled with what appears to be rocks or rubble, are rendered with simple elegance, their reflections subtly mirrored in the water. This inclusion of daily human activity, though minimal, adds a layer of narrative to the otherwise placid landscape. The middle ground is occupied by the expansive bay itself, leading the viewer's eye towards the horizon. Across the water, the outlines of buildings and small landforms can be seen, suggesting the vibrant life of the coastal town. The portrayal of water in varying shades of blue and grey blends seamlessly with the sky, creating a harmonious interplay of colors and enhancing the vastness of the scene.Dominating the background, Mount Vesuvius stands majestically, its slopes softly shaded to depict the play of light across its surface. Despite its historic volatility, the volcano here appears dormant, adding to the peacefulness of the scene rather than threatening it.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
