More about this artwork

This painting by Christen Købke, titled "View Of A Street In Østerbro Outside Copenhagen," offers a serene and picturesque look at a daily life scene in a 19th-century Danish neighborhood. The canvas showcases a street scene in Østerbro, an area outside Copenhagen, under a vast, gently clouded sky lit by the soft, warm light of either early morning or late afternoon. The right side of the painting is dominated by tall poplar trees and a row of traditional Danish houses with face-bricked walls and tiled roofs, typical of the Danish architectural style of that era. This setup frames the street, leading the viewer's eye into the depths of the painting. The street itself is bustling with life: we see several people engaged in everyday activities. Prominently, there's a group of cows being herded down the road, capturing a rural aspect of life even in the proximity of a city. Alongside them, we see various figures, including women conversing by the roadside, a man strolling, and several horse-drawn carriages, conveying the modes of transportation used at the time.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
