More about this artwork

The painting "Inger Margrethe Høyen, Born Schrøder" by Christen Købke is a finely detailed portrait that showcases the artist's skill in capturing both the physical and subtle emotional essence of his subjects. The portrait depicts an elderly woman with a gentle, yet distinctly firm expression, giving us an insight into her character and perhaps her life experiences. She wears a traditional white cap, common in the attire of elder women of her time, which frames her face and highlights her expressive eyes and weathered features. Her clothing includes a shawl draped loosely over her shoulders, adorned with light blue stripes, which add a subtle touch of color to the otherwise muted palette dominated by earth tones. The background of the portrait is notably plain and dark, focusing all attention on the subject. This setting not only isolates her as the focal point but also enhances the feeling of intimacy between the viewer and the depicted figure. Købke’s technique in rendering the textures of her skin, the fabric of her garments, and the soft, almost translucent quality of her cap speaks to his mastery of depicting various materials and human anatomy.Overall, the painting is a touching representation that goes beyond mere physical likeness, aiming to convey a deeper sense of the individual’s spirit and disposition. It's a vivid example of how the Golden Age of Danish painting was often centered on the refined execution of light, texture, and human emotion.

Portraits, landscapes and the beauty of Scandinavian nature by Christen Købke (1810-1848). “The Danish master of light” was one of the best-known artists of the Danish Golden Age. Born in Copenhagen, Købke trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under the portrait painter C.A Lorentzen. It was here that he was introduced to plein-air painting, which became the hallmark of his later work.
