More about this artwork

In the masterful composition "Still Life with Flowers" by Odilon Redon, viewers are invited into a dreamlike ambiance where nature melds with fantasy. Redon, renowned for his unique blend of Symbolism and early Impressionism, introduces us to a world where the boundaries of reality are subtly blurred, leaving a lasting impression of enchanting beauty. At the heart of this painting lies a vibrant bouquet of flowers arranged in an expressive, almost sentient vase. The flowers, depicted in lush, radiant tones, vary in species and color, each bloom contributing to a harmonious yet eclectic whole. Redon’s use of soft edges and fluid forms helps the flowers to appear as if they are gently swaying, breathing with a life of their own.The background and the space around the flowers enshroud them in a muted, earthy palette, where the occasional hint of a butterfly or a whimsical petal floating away adds a layer of delicate movement. These floating elements, painted with a lighter, almost transparent quality, enhance the ethereal feel of the composition, suggesting a fleeting, ephemeral moment captured in time."Still Life with Flowers" is more than a traditional floral painting; it is a meditation on beauty and the transient nature of life. Odilon Redon's work invites viewers to pause and reflect, finding joy in the ephemeral and the everyday.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
