More about this artwork

This striking painting by Odilon Redon, titled "The Fallen Angel Spreads His Black Wings," depicts a hauntingly ethereal scene that engages richly with themes of mysticism and surrealism, both of which are hallmarks of Redon's artistic style. The image shows a figure, presumably an angel due to the presence of large, dark wings, rendered with a look of profound contemplation or melancholy. The angel’s gaze is direct, meeting the viewer's eyes with an intense and almost unsettling openness. The angel's wings are spread out, but they are not bright and light as one might expect; instead, they are dark and shadowy, contributing to the somber mood of the artwork. The use of monochromatic shades adds to the eerie and otherworldly atmosphere, emphasizing the spiritual and symbolic dimensions of the figure. The angel's expression and direct gaze might suggest a moment of existential reflection or crisis, highlighted by the contrasting darkness of the wings and the ethereal glow of the angel’s skin. The texture and technique used in this piece are also notable, with the soft yet detailed charcoal strokes adding a tactile dimension to the image, enhancing its dreamlike and introspective quality. The artwork raises questions about the nature of fallen angels in mythology—beings caught between the divine and the mortal, the dark and the light, embodying a deep universal struggle.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
