More about this artwork

This painting by Odilon Redon, titled "Saint George and the Dragon", captures a moment from the famous legend of Saint George, who is known for slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices. The painting, executed in Redon's unique blend of Symbolist and Expressionist styles, depicts Saint George mounted on a horse, presumably at the climax of his battle with the dragon. The figure of Saint George is shown in the left part of the painting, heroically posed on his horse, which is prancing as if startled or rearing back from the dragon. The saint appears to be looking down towards the dragon, positioned below them. The depiction of the dragon itself is somewhat abstracted but can be discerned as a dark, serpentine form, sprawled on the ground, presenting a less menacing appearance than traditional descriptions. In the background, Redon uses a rich, atmospheric palette to evoke a dramatic and almost apocalyptic setting, dominated by a luminous, reddish orb, possibly the sun or an element symbolizing divine intervention or climax. The sky is a swirl of vibrant and tumultuous clouds, shifting in color from yellow and pink to deep blues and reds, suggesting the turbulence of the battle.Overall, the painting is imbued with a sense of mystique and emotional depth characteristic of Redon's work.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
