More about this artwork

"Stillleben mit Weintrauben und Pistole" (1856) by Franz Xaver Petter is a captivating example of 19th-century still life painting, rich in detail and symbolism. The painting masterfully depicts a lush scene overflowing with various clusters of ripe grapes positioned in an old, rustic wooden barrel. The verdant grapevines and leaves entangle around the barrel, adding a natural element that contrasts sharply with the crafted human items in the scene. The scene is set against a distant landscape, suggesting the vastness of nature and possibly the vires of vineyard territories, under a sky that transitions from stormy to clear, symbolizing the passing of time or the shift between peace and conflict. This is emphasized by the juxtaposition of the gun and flask lying on the ground in the foreground, elements not typically associated with the tranquility of fruit still lifes. The presence of the flintlock pistol and the powder flask intriguingly suggests narratives of protection, danger, or historical tales tied to the pastoral life or the nature of the times.Through "Stillleben mit Weintrauben und Pistole," Petter not only showcases his skill in rendering textures—from the translucency of the grapes to the weathered wood and metallic sheen of the gun—but also instigates a dialogue about the coexistence of beauty and threat, nature and human intervention.

Franz Xaver Andreas Petter (23 October 1791 – 11 May 1866) was an Austrian artist. Petter was born in Lichtental; his father was a painter of porcelain, and it was intended that he should follow in the same profession, but Petter developed an interest in oil painting. He studied under Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Franz Xaver Petter was one of the most important still-life artists of the Biedermeier period in Vienna. He specialised in floral arrangements, and later arrangements of fruit, and landscapes with flowers, continuing the Dutch Golden Age flower still life depicting traditions. Petter's pictures were very popular with the Austrian nobility.

Petter married Catherine Hamböck (1793-1858). They had two sons, Theodore, who became an artist, and Gustav, a musician. Franz Xaver Petter died in May 1866 in Vienna.
