More about this artwork

Experience the vibrant and meticulously detailed "Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Walnuts," a captivating painting from 1823 by the renowned Austrian artist Franz Xaver Petter. This exquisite artwork serves as a testament to Petter's mastery in capturing the essence of still life, presenting an array of fruits arranged harmoniously within a natural setting that seems almost tangible. At the forefront of the painting, a rich assortment of grapes cascades across the canvas; both sunlit golden and deep blue varieties glimmer with a lifelike sheen, their succulence suggested by meticulous brushwork that catches the light. Nestled among the grape clusters are ripe, blush-tinted peaches, their velvety skins rendered with such precision that one can almost feel their softness. Complementing these fruits are scattered walnuts, their hard, textured shells contrasting with the smooth, round forms of the fruit.Adding to the composition's depth and realism are broad grape leaves and twisting vines that introduce shades of green, their natural imperfections portrayed with artistic authenticity. Lurking in the background, the delicate figure of a butterfly perches gracefully, suggestive of a fleeting moment captured in time, adding a dynamic element to this serene arrangement.Franz Xaver Petter's "Still Life with Grapes, Peaches and Walnuts" not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also showcases the artist's skill in creating texture and depth, making this painting a cherished masterpiece of still life artistry.

Franz Xaver Andreas Petter (23 October 1791 – 11 May 1866) was an Austrian artist. Petter was born in Lichtental; his father was a painter of porcelain, and it was intended that he should follow in the same profession, but Petter developed an interest in oil painting. He studied under Johann Baptist Drechsler at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Franz Xaver Petter was one of the most important still-life artists of the Biedermeier period in Vienna. He specialised in floral arrangements, and later arrangements of fruit, and landscapes with flowers, continuing the Dutch Golden Age flower still life depicting traditions. Petter's pictures were very popular with the Austrian nobility.

Petter married Catherine Hamböck (1793-1858). They had two sons, Theodore, who became an artist, and Gustav, a musician. Franz Xaver Petter died in May 1866 in Vienna.
