More about this artwork

(1880) by Stanislas LépineIn this captivating painting by the French artist Stanislas Lépine, viewers are transported to the historic heart of Paris, observing La Place de la Concorde through the serene and sculptural greens of the Tuileries Garden. Painted in 1880, this artwork presents a tranquil, impressionistic view of one of the city's most bustling squares, captured from a perspective that provides both intimacy and grandeur. The composition is framed by the slender trunks of the garden’s trees, through which we glimpse the meticulously crafted statue of La Marianne, personifying the French Republic, perched atop a decorative fountain. The earthy tones of the foreground contrast with the pale, suggestive strokes depicting the sky, injecting a sense of calm into the urban landscape.Foreground elements feature Parisians of the period, engaged in leisurely activities that suggest a sunny, peaceful day. A couple sits beneath a tree's shadow, deep in conversation, while children nearby play, their forms rendered in quick, deft strokes that echo the fleeting nature of the moment. In the background, Lépine hints at the hustle and bustle of distant figures and carriages, their details melted into impressionist hues and shapes.Lépine's use of light and shadow, combined with his softened yet dynamic brushwork, not only captures a specific location but also evokes the atmosphere of Paris in the late 19th century. Through his painting, we receive more than just a visual experience; we are offered a moment paused in time, inviting reflection on the beauty of everyday life in historical Paris.

Stanislas Victor Edouard Lépine was a French painter who specialized in landscapes, especially views of the Seine.

Lépine was born in Caen. An important influence in his artistic formation was Corot, whom he met in Normandy in 1859, becoming his student the following year.

Lépine's favorite subject was the Seine, which he was to paint in all its aspects for the rest of his life.
