More about this artwork

This painting by Samuel Colman, titled "Oxcarts, Italy," is a detailed study of oxcarts and oxen, capturing the essence of rustic Italian life. The painting is divided into three segments, each depicting elements associated with oxcarts, a common sight in rural Italy during the period. In the first segment, there are two oxen, each painted with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing their sturdy build and the texture of their coats. These powerful creatures are typically used for pulling carts and plowing fields, evident in their strong, muscular appearance. The second segment features an oxcart fully assembled and loaded, possibly with goods or harvest. The cart is covered with a canvas, protecting whatever is underneath. The design of the cart, with its wooden frame and large wheels, is typical of the period and suggests a utilitarian purpose. The presence of another ox, possibly waiting to be harnessed to the cart, adds to the narrative of rural labor and transportation. The final segment of the painting offers a closer view of a different oxcart, this one unattended and with no canopy. Interestingly, this cart has an ox lying down beside it, possibly resting after a day's work. This could symbolize the fatigue that comes with hard labor, or simply a moment of rest in a typical day.The earthy tones and the choice of background color enhance the feeling of simplicity and the rural setting.
