More about this artwork

In the evocative painting "The Return of the Holy Family from Egypt," the gifted Spanish Baroque painter Bartolomé Estebán Murillo portrays a serene yet profound moment in the life of the Holy Family. The work is a prime example of Murillo's tender depictions of religious themes, characterized by soft lighting and warm, harmonious colors that invoke deep emotions. The painting shows the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and a young Jesus returning from their flight to Egypt, a biblical event celebrated for its depiction of divine protection and guidance. Mary, clothed in a rich, red robe with a deep blue mantle, reflects a sense of calm maturity and maternal grace, her gaze lowered in contemplation. Beside her, Saint Joseph stands protectively, dressed in earthy tones, his demeanor serene yet watchful. At the center, the young Jesus confidently steps forward, his small hand reaching towards Joseph, illustrating the trust and bond within the Holy Family.Above, the celestial scene bursts with divine affirmation—the presence of God the Father, an angel playing a cello, and cherubs surrounded by a radiant glow, all symbolize divine approval and guidance. The inclusion of the Holy Spirit as a dove completes the Trinitarian representation, adding a layer of deep spiritual significance to the family’s journey.Murillo's skill in using light to emphasize innocence and purity is evident in how the divine light illuminates Jesus, highlighting his central role in the narrative. The distant landscape and the blooming flowers near Joseph further symbolize hope and the promised safety of their homeland.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (December 1617, January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively realistic portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. In 2017–18, the two museums held an exhibition of them.
