More about this artwork

Artist: Bartolomé Estebán MurilloThis captivating sketch, crafted by the renowned Spanish painter Bartolomé Estebán Murillo in 1655, depicts a tender and introspective portrayal of Saint John the Baptist in his youth. The work resonates with Murillo's signature style, which often draws on religious themes articulated through a delicate and humane lens.In "The Youthful Saint John the Baptist Seated in a Landscape," we encounter young Saint John seated thoughtfully in a rustic setting. He holds a thin staff that gracefully curves at the top, presumably a symbol of his future proclamation and baptizing ministry. The staff also features a hanging strip, possibly a ribbon or a piece of cloth, adding a gentle movement to the otherwise serene composition. The saint’s attire is simple yet elegantly drawn, with flowing lines that suggest the airy, loose garments typical of a hermit. Murillo’s skill in rendering fabric and the human form is evident in the careful attention to folds and the organic drape of the cloth. The scene is imbued with a sense of tranquility and natural beauty. The background, though lightly sketched, hints at a pastoral landscape that complements the saint’s reflective pose. This sketch not only showcases Murillo’s mastery with the pen but also his ability to convey profound spiritual narratives through subtle expressions and gestures.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (December 1617, January 1, 1618 – April 3, 1682) was a Spanish Baroque painter. Although he is best known for his religious works, Murillo also produced a considerable number of paintings of contemporary women and children. These lively realistic portraits of flower girls, street urchins, and beggars constitute an extensive and appealing record of the everyday life of his times. He also painted two self-portraits, one in the Frick Collection portraying him in his 30s, and one in London's National Gallery portraying him about 20 years later. In 2017–18, the two museums held an exhibition of them.
