More about this artwork

Emile-Allain Séguy's "Papillons, Pl. 20" (1925) beautifully embodies the artist's fascination with the natural world, especially with butterflies, utilizing intricate patterns and vibrant colors. This artwork features a collection of mesmerizing designs that highlight the unique and complex wing patterns of butterflies. Each segment of the painting reveals a different theme and color scheme - merging art with the scientific precision of an entomologist. The top left panel treats the viewer to shades of turquoise and violet, contrasting sharply with the stark white and earthy browns, capturing the delicate yet striking presence of butterflies against a possibly night-time backdrop. Moving to the top right, a robust interpretation with a vertical orientation features wings in yellow and various shades of pink and brown, intersected by bold black lines that give an almost stained-glass effect. The bottom left panel shifts to a golden-yellow motif, where circular, eye-like patterns dominate, suggesting the intricate detailing often seen on moth wings, set against a rich golden background that exudes warmth. Lastly, the bottom right section dives into a cooler palette with shades of blue and brown, providing a strong visual anchor with its dynamic, spread-wing composition.Together, these panels are not only a tribute to the beauty of butterflies but also demonstrate Séguy's mastery in graphic design and color theory. This work serves as a splendid intersection of science, nature, and art, inviting observers to appreciate the extraordinary diversity and intricacy in the wings of these delicate creatures. Perfect for both art enthusiasts and naturalists, "Papillons, Pl.

Emile-Allain Séguy was a popular French designer throughout the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the 1920s. Often confused with the French entomologist Eugene Séguy who was active during the same time period, E.A. Séguy designed primarily patterns and textiles and was heavily influenced by the natural world. He was particularly fond of the intricate patterns and beauty of insects (Eugene would have approved), which he saw as “mechanic wonders” that provided abundant inspiration for interior design (Schiff, 157).
