More about this artwork
This enchanting illustration by John R. Neill, titled "The Marvelous Land of Oz Pl.33," captures a dramatic moment from the beloved children's book series by L. Frank Baum. In this scene, an awe-inspiring Griffin breaks through the canvas wall of a tent, creating a mixture of chaos and wonder. The Griffin, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, is shown mid-action, with powerful wings extended and claws fiercely displayed. The scene also features a character, dressed in a flowing pink robe and wearing a crown, who stands in a state of shock and dismay, her hand to her mouth as she witnesses the unexpected intrusion. Her expression and the movement of the fabric around her enhance the suddenness and dynamism of the Griffin's entrance. The use of soft pink hues in the background contrasts strikingly with the darker shades of the Griffin, drawing the viewer's attention to the creature while also highlighting the surreal and otherworldly nature of the event.
