More about this artwork

"The Mermaid Pl 2," created by Edmund Dulac in 1911, transports viewers into an enchanting underwater scene that is as mystical as it is serene. Dulac, renowned for his profound skill in capturing fantastical subjects, paints a mermaid entwined within the embrace of the tranquil sea.In this painting, the mermaid is depicted with a delicate and ethereal presence, slightly obscured by the water's gentle currents. Her form melds with the ocean's depths, her hair flowing like seaweed in the fluid environment. The color palette is a dreamy mélange of cool blues, greens, and hints of purple, evoking a feeling of depth and vastness in the underwater world. This environment is not just water; it is a living space, rich with the unseen and the unknown.Dulac's use of soft, blended brushstrokes adds to the mystical quality of the image, making the mermaid seem as though she is part of the water itself. This technique creates a sense of motion in the still image, as if the water is perpetually swirling around her."The Mermaid Pl 2" does not just depict a mythical being; it invites the viewer to contemplate the beauty and mysteries of the underwater realm and the creatures that might dwell within it.

Edmund Dulac (born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 – 25 May 1953) was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer. Born in Toulouse he studied law but later turned to the study of art at the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London early in the 20th century and in 1905 received his first commission to illustrate the novels of the Brontë Sisters. During World War I, Dulac produced relief books and when after the war the deluxe children's book market shrank he turned to magazine illustrations among other ventures. He designed banknotes during World War II and postage stamps, most notably those that heralded the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
