More about this artwork

Odilon Redon's lithograph "Pégase captif" captures a moment both somber and poetic. The image is haunting, etched in tones of black and grey, depicting the mythical Pegasus in a state of captivity. Dominating the space is the majestic form of the winged horse, expressed through bold, fluid lines and intense shadowy contrasts that convey its muscular structure and dynamic presence. This artwork invites the viewer into a world of symbolism—a favorite realm for Redon. The bound creature can be seen as a metaphor for the stifling of creativity and freedom. The vivid detailing of its form against a minimally detailed background makes the figure of Pegasus jump out at the viewer, highlighting its plight and evoking a strong emotional response. Pegasus, a symbol of poetic inspiration and soaring spirit, is shown in shackles, and this contrast creates a poignant tension within the scene."Pégase captif" is exemplary of Redon’s unique style, merging the dreamlike boundary between visible and invisible worlds. He masterfully uses the lithographic medium to explore themes of dream, fantasy, and the psyche. This piece is not just a visual experience but an invitation to introspection about the forces that bind or elevate the human spirit.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
