More about this artwork

Welcome to our exploration of Odilon Redon's fascinating work "L’Art Celeste" (The Celestial Art), created in 1894. This intriguing lithograph captivates viewers with its ethereal and dreamlike qualities, characteristic of Redon's approach to art.The painting prominently features a serene, almost meditative, giant face that occupies the right side of the canvas. This face, with its eyes closed and a placid expression, seems to be immersed in deep contemplation or in a state of transcendence, suggesting a detachment from the mundane to a more celestial realm.Hovering to the left of the face is a figure of an angel playing a violin. The angel, with delicate wings, appears in motion, suggesting the act of flying through the celestial or spiritual space. The music instrument, beautifully detailed, enhances the otherworldly atmosphere of the piece, implying that the music being played might be of a divine or transcendental nature. The background of the image is softly textured, almost cloud-like, which further enriches the feeling of being in a heavenly or an undefined mystical space. The soft, sketch-like quality of the lithography adds to the ethereal and intangible feel of the artwork.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
