More about this artwork

"Scene At The Ball" (1884) by Albert Edelfelt masterfully captures a moment of intimate conversation amidst a grand social event. In this splendid work, Edelfelt depicts a young woman and a bearded gentleman seated closely, engrossed in each other’s company. The woman, elegantly dressed in a flowing white gown, sits with a book in hand, her attention turned towards the gentleman, who leans forward in earnest dialogue. His formal attire contrasts with her delicate dress, emphasizing the intimacy and warmth of their interaction. The setting is richly rendered with soft brushstrokes, hinting at a luxurious ballroom environment. A warmly glowing lamp casts a gentle light, adding a romantic hue to the scene, while in the background, the ghostly outline of another guest adds depth to the gathering, suggesting the continuation of the event beyond this quiet corner.Edelfelt’s skill in capturing the subtle dynamics between individuals is on full display here. The scene is both private and open, a personal bubble amidst a public event, rendered in a style that is both impressionistic and emotionally evocative, drawing viewers into that moment of connection and shared understanding.
