More about this artwork
In the captivating creation by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita titled "Ovaal met een kop in profiel naar rechts, twee benen en een kop met gesloten ogen" (Oval with a Head in Profile to the Right, Two Legs, and a Head with Closed Eyes), we witness a mesmerizing interplay of abstract forms and human elements. Created on November 24, 1943, this pencil sketch showcases the intricate and distinctive style that distinguishes de Mesquita’s work. The central theme of the painting revolves around an oval shape that delicately encapsulates various human features. At a glance, the viewer is drawn to a prominently sketched head in profile facing right, depicted with a deep and contemplative expression. The nuanced shading and detailed lines around the eyes and nose breathe life into this figure, suggesting a moment of introspection or deep thought.Adjacent to this profile, the artwork presents another head, marked by closed eyes and a serene countenance, possibly suggesting a state of slumber or meditation. This juxtaposition of a contemplative profile and a restful face invites viewers to ponder relationships between different states of being or consciousness.Additionally, the inclusion of two abstractly rendered legs adds a peculiar but harmonious balance to the composition, enhancing the surreal quality that often characterizes de Mesquita's work. The legs appear almost suspended within the oval, contributing to a floating sensation within the confined space of the sketch.Rendered exclusively in pencil, the subtle gradient tones and the delicate interplay of light and shadow in this piece exhibit de Mesquita's mastery in utilizing monochromatic elements to evoke depth and emotion.
