More about this artwork

Capturing both the ethos and anatomy of the human form, Albert Edelfelt’s “Male Model, Study” reflects the rigorous detail and emotional depth characteristic of his work. Painted between 1874 and 1875, this compelling study showcases a semi-nude male standing confidently, his gaze directed off canvas, which suggests a narrative beyond the viewer’s sight. His matured and muscular physique is rendered with a nuanced mastery of light and shadow, highlighting the natural strength and contours of his body. His expression is contemplative and dignified, adding a layer of introspective depth to the composition. The rough, painterly style enhances the impression of a moment captured in time, a fleeting pause in a longer session perhaps, echoing the spontaneity and rawness of life drawing classes of the period. The background is subdued, focusing all attention on the figure himself and the play of light on his form. This painting is not merely a technical study but also a poignant human portrait, offering a window into the studio practice of Edelfelt and his sensitive approach to the human figure.
