More about this artwork
"Enfant Nu Ou Annie Et Pauline," painted by Maurice Denis in 1925, is a tender portrayal of maternal affection and childhood innocence. The painting features a young woman, presumably a mother, gently holding up a chubby, smiling infant. In her seated position, dressed in a simple but elegant patterned dress, the woman gazes up adoringly at the child, who appears delighted by the attention. The warmth between the two figures is palpable, enhanced by soft, pastel-like tones that Denis employs to create a sense of intimacy and serenity. The background, simplicity itself with muted shades of peach and creamy yellows, focuses attention entirely on the interaction between the figures. This work embodies the characteristics of Denis’s later style, marked by a return to traditional themes and a focus on family and private life.

French painter Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was one of the leading artists during the transition from Impressionism to Modern Art. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist works of Paul Gauguin. Denis would paint with rich colors and experiment with warm and cool colors. Some of his theories have become the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art.
