More about this artwork
Samuel Ehrhart's "Modern" is a captivating illustration that delves into the subtleties of social dynamics and fashion at the close of the 19th century. This artwork, rich in detail and character, portrays a moment between a young man and a woman in an elegantly furnished drawing room. The man, dressed in a striking combination of a dark jacket, a boldly patterned vest, and tartan trousers, stands with an air of casual confidence. His pose, with one hand resting on his hip and a slightly bemused expression, suggests a conversation laced with irony or mild exasperation. The woman, comfortably seated and wrapped in a robe adorned with floral embroidery, holds a piece of paper—perhaps a letter or a literary piece—which seems to be the subject of their interaction. Her expression, characterized by a wry smile, indicates amusement or a challenge to the standing gentleman’s statements. The background is filled with objects that signify the upper-class setting: a plush upholstered chair, decorative vases, a mantelpiece adorned with sculptures, and a warmly lit fireplace—all contributing to the ambiance of a well-to-do Victorian home.Ehrhart's use of bright, vivid colors and clean lines injects a lively, somewhat humorous quality to the piece, underscoring the contrast between the characters' personalities and their respective social roles. "Modern" not only reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of its time but also offers a nuanced commentary on the social etiquettes and the evolving dynamics between genders during the late Victorian era.
