More about this artwork
"Spurring Him On" is a vibrant colored illustration by Samuel Ehrhart, created in 1904. This lively scene captures a humorous and essentially satirical moment in a lush, park-like setting. Central to the image is a well-dressed, rotund man clad in a checkered suit and top hat, expressing a flustered surprise. A young, elegantly attired woman is seen playfully adjusting the spur on the gentleman's boot, his walking stick loosely held in surprise. Her attire, detailed with lace and ribbon, exudes the style of the early 20th century, adding a touch of finesse to the playful scenario. In the background, two other characters, possibly military men, observe the situation. Their uniforms and the relaxed setting suggest a leisurely day out, possibly at a public event or gathering. The setting is airy and festive, with hints of greenery and distant structures that resemble part of a fair or exhibition ground. This painting by Ehrhart, known for his ability to weave humor and critique into his works, cleverly comments on societal norms and relationships of the time.
