More about this artwork

Albert Edelfelt’s poignant painting titled "Portrait of the Artist’s Sister Berta Edelfelt" from 1884 stands as a captivating testament to familial affection and artistic sensitivity. The painted image showcases Berta Edelfelt, the artist's younger sister, in a moment of youthful stillness. Her direct gaze is both arresting and introspective, suggesting a depth of character that transcends her tender age.Berta is adorned with a vibrant red hat, providing a striking contrast to her dark dress with intricate white lace collar, which adds a delicate touch to the otherwise solemn attire. The lush greenery subtly evident in the blurred background suggests a setting of tranquil nature, perhaps a garden or a quiet park, harmonizing with the serene mood of the portrait.Albert Edelfelt's masterful use of light and shadow in this work emphasizes Berta’s youthful features while also highlighting the textural details of her clothing. The composition brilliantly captures a balance between realism and emotional expression, creating a portrait that is not merely a visual likeness but a profound representation of a sister through the eyes of her brother. This painting not only shows the skill of Edelfelt as a portraitist but also offers viewers a glimpse into his personal life, revealing the tender bonds within his family.
