More about this artwork
"Gardiner Greene Hammond, Jr. (1895)" is a striking example of the portrait mastery of the renowned American artist John Singer Sargent. Painted in 1895, the portrait captures the calm countenance and refined style of its subject, Gardiner Greene Hammond, Jr., rendering him with exquisite detail and vibrant realism.Set against a subdued, almost shadowy background that enhances the focus on the subject, Sargent employs his signature loose brushstrokes, creating a vivid, lifelike presence that seems almost tangible. The sitter is presented in a dark suit, complemented by a light, delicately tied ascot that adds a touch of elegance to his attire. His mustache and the slight flush on his cheeks are depicted with a softness that contrasts skillfully with the sharpness of his gaze.Sargent’s ability to capture the personality and the subtle uniqueness of his subjects is evident here, as he allows us a glimpse into the demeanor of Mr. Hammond. This painting not only showcases the artist's technical prowess but also his capacity to convey the inner life of the person he is portraying.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America.
