More about this artwork

Description: Albert Edelfelt's striking work, "Male Model, Academy Study," created in 1875, showcases the artist's adept skill in classical figure painting, a hallmark of 19th-century academic art. This painting captures a male model in a contemplative pose, skillfully rendered to highlight the naturalistic details of muscular structure and human form. The model's pose—standing with one foot elevated on a block, his body slightly twisted, with one arm resting on his raised knee—demonstrates a mastery of human anatomy and the play of light and shadow on skin. The painting's nuanced palette is predominantly composed of earth tones that accentuate the physical form of the model against a muted, nondescript background, directing the viewer's full attention to the subject. Noteworthy is the precise date, "le 15 mai 1875," inscribed on the pedestal, which not only marks the creation date but also adds a historic and personal touch to the piece.Edelfelt's work is a prime example of academic study where the objective was often to perfect technique and capture human anatomy with as much accuracy and detail as possible. This piece not only displays technical prowess but also conveys a deep sensitivity to the human condition, through the pensive demeanor of the model.
