More about this artwork

Welcome to an introspective journey into the mystical world of Odilon Redon, a master of Symbolist art, as we present one of his lesser-known but profoundly stirring works, "La Vierge d’Aurore."This painting, dating back to around 1890, showcases Redon’s unique ability to blend reality with the dream-like atmospheres. In "La Vierge d’Aurore," we are met with the serene visage of a woman, emerging ghostlike against a backdrop imbued with warm, glowing hues of gold and amber. This ethereal figure is enveloped in what appears to be a hooded cloak, her face a mask of tranquility and gentle solemnity.Redon's artistry lies in his subtle yet powerful use of color and form. The background radiates with a luminous, almost supernatural light that seems to halo the woman, suggesting a divine or mystical presence. Her closed eyes evoke a sense of inward reflection or meditation, possibly hinting at transcendence or spiritual awakening."La Vierge d’Aurore" is a remarkable testament to Odilon Redon’s fascination with the invisible and the ineffable. This painting not only serves as a visual representation of mystical experience but also invites the viewer to pause and reflect on the deeper spiritual realities that lie beyond the surface.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
