More about this artwork

"Child," painted by Alexej von Jawlensky in 1909, is a captivating expressionist portrait that invites viewers to explore the emotional depth and stylistic audacity characteristic of Jawlensky’s work. The painting features a young girl set against a strikingly bold background. Her gaze, direct and possibly contemplative, along with the simplified yet expressive features of her face, draw us into a silent dialogue with the subject.Jawlensky uses vivid colors to compose the painting— the deep blues and sharp reds contrast starkly with the softer tones of the child's face and blond hair, which is adorned with a red ribbon. The choice of colors is not just visually impactful but also plays a significant role in conveying the mood of the portrait. The child’s clothing is rendered in a mix of purple and blue, with highlights and shadows that add depth to the figure. This piece is an exemplary reflection of Jawlensky's move towards abstraction, progressively simplifying forms and using color to express emotion. The painting evokes a sense of innocence and the intensity of early youth, making viewers pause and reflect on perhaps the inner world of the child."Child" is not merely a portrayal of a young girl but an exploration into the power of expression through the bold and emotive use of color which is typical of Jawlensky's style during this period.
