More about this artwork

The artwork titled "It Is a Skull Wreathed with Roses. It Dominates a Woman’s Torso of Pearly Whiteness" by Odilon Redon, crafted in 1888, is a compelling piece that masterfully intertwines themes of mortality and beauty. Redon, known for his unique approach to Symbolism, employs his adept skill in lithography to explore deep, philosophical themes through a distinct visual style. In this striking monochrome print, the viewer is presented with a robust, enigmatic image of what appears to be a sea creature or fossil rather than a skull or a human form. The abstract quality and coarse textures articulate vivid contrasts of light and shade, amplifying the work's otherworldly and dreamlike aura. This accelerates the transcendence from the literal objects into metaphorical representations. The phantom-like form, with its serpentine and robust features, seems to both emerge from and sink into the shadowy abyss, conjuring a sense of the eternal dance between life and death. Redon's preference for the undefined stimulates the viewer's imagination, inviting personal interpretations that resonate with the universal cycles of nature and existence. This lithograph is not just a visual experience but also an invitation to ponder the ephemeral qualities of life juxtaposed with eternal elements of beauty and decay, captured in the timeless medium of print.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
