More about this artwork

Titled "Le Vitrail," this enchanting painting by Odilon Redon offers a mystical glimpse through a stained-glass window, enshrouded in the rich textures and vibrant splashes of color that are signatures of Redon's work. The artwork features a trio of arched window panes, each pane alive with a flurry of color resembling floral patterns or abstract forms that evoke the feeling of a garden as seen through glass. At the rightmost arch of the window, a figure appears, partially obscured and melded effortlessly with the colors and light diffused by the stained glass. This figure, suggestive and dreamlike, perhaps represents a saint or an angel, imparting an aura of quiet contemplation and spiritual reverie. The integration of the figure with the colors around it emphasizes the ethereal quality of the scene, blurring the line between the tangible and the transcendent.Redon’s use of color and texture not only beautifies the scene but also adds a layer of depth and mystery, inviting the viewer to pause and lose themselves in contemplation. The rough, almost decayed texture of the wall surrounding the window adds a contrast to the vivid glass, suggesting themes of decay versus splendor, and the temporal versus the eternal.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
