More about this artwork
This striking oil painting by the Dutch Impressionist George Hendrik Breitner reveals a moment of gentle stillness in a field, where a group of cavalrymen and their horses are captured in a pause from activity. Titled "Cavalry at Repose," the artwork beautifully illustrates Breitner’s fascination with military life, evoking a vivid narrative through his expressive use of brush and color. The painting is saturated with deep, earthy tones that serve as a backdrop to the nuanced interplay of light and shadow. Breitner, known for his ability to capture movement and emotion, here applies this skill to convey a sense of calmness. The dynamic arrangement of the horses and men creates a composition that is both cohesive and loosely structured, allowing the viewer's eye to wander across the canvas, from one figure to another. Each horse, uniquely marked and standing with a relaxed posture, contrasts starkly against the darker uniforms of the soldiers. Little interaction occurs among the men themselves, who are variously engaged with their mounts, adjusting a strap here, patting a neck there. This portrayal not only reflects a routine moment in military life but also invites the viewer to contemplate the bond between the cavalrymen and their horses. With "Cavalry at Repose," Breitner has not merely depicted a military scene; he has translated an ordinary moment into a profound visual meditation on composure and quietude amidst the regimen of soldierly duty.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
