More about this artwork
This evocative watercolor captures a serene moment in the daily routines of the hussars, depicted standing alongside their horses. Created by the Dutch master George Hendrik Breitner between 1867 and 1923, this painting showcases a group of hussars, distinctive with their dark uniforms and adorned shako hats, as they pause by the roadside, amidst a leafy backdrop. The horses, varying in shades of brown, stand in a line, bridled and calm, seemingly at ease with their surroundings and the momentary halt. The soft, fluid application of watercolors gives the scene a somewhat ethereal quality, blurring lines slightly to evoke movement in the stillness. Breitner's skill in capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow is evident, lending the piece a naturalistic feel that draws the viewer into this quiet roadside scene. As an artist known for his realist and impressionist works, Breitner's ability to convey atmosphere and mood plays out beautifully here, inviting contemplation on the life and duties of these 19th-century cavalry soldiers.

George Hendrik Breitner (12 September 1857 – 5 June 1923) was a Dutch painter and photographer. An important figure in Amsterdam Impressionism, he is noted especially for his paintings of street scenes and harbours in a realistic style. He painted en plein air, and became interested in photography as a means of documenting street life and atmospheric effects – rainy weather in particular – as reference materials for his paintings.
