More about this artwork

"Large Vase with Flowers" by Odilon Redon encapsulates the artist's unique ability to blend reality with dream-like abstraction. Created in 1912, this painting exemplifies Redon's vibrant yet ethereal approach to still life that separates him from his contemporaries. In the painting, a large vase, rendered in rich shades of blue and shadowed with tinges of red and violet, cradles an assortment of flowers. The flowers themselves seem to burst forth in an array of colors—soft pinks, deep oranges, bright yellows, and subtle whites—all intermingling with touches of green foliage. The arrangement is both lush and whimsical, marked by Redon's loose, expressive brushwork that suggests movement, as if the blooms are gently swaying. The background, a soft, undefined mixture of neutral tones, allows the floral display to stand out, almost as if glowing. Small, almost imperceptible brushstrokes of color suggest additional flowers or perhaps fallen petals, emphasizing a sense of impermanence and fleeting beauty. What makes Redon’s work particularly mesmerizing is his ability to infuse his subjects with a sense of the mystical. "Large Vase with Flowers" is not just a static floral arrangement; it is a meditative piece that invites viewers to glance into a world where nature and imagination intertwine seamlessly.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
