More about this artwork
This evocative sketch by Finnish artist Magnus Enckell, titled "Luonnos maalaukseen Äiti ja lapsi (Pietà)," beautifully captures the tender and poignant relationship between a mother and child. Created during the years 1913 to 1915, Enckell’s piece is a fascinating exploration of maternal love, depicted in a style that merges loose brushwork with a keen sense of emotion. The painting portrays a mother cloaked in a shawl, holding her child close to her bosom. The mother’s face, shaded and serene, gazes downwards toward her child, radiating a mix of contemplation and deep affection. The child, nestled within the safety of her embrace, reinforces a universal theme of nurturing and protection.Enckell’s use of muted yet expressive colors and the dynamic, almost unfinished strokes give this sketch a raw, immediate quality, suggesting the fleeting, intimate moments shared between parent and child. The background is rendered in soft washes of color, focusing attention on the central figures and enhancing the overall mood of intimacy and introspection. This piece not only highlights Enckell’s talent in capturing human emotion and his mastery of form but also serves as a touching reminder of the timeless and universal bond between a mother and her child.
