More about this artwork

We are delighted to present a distinguished work by Pieter Claesz, the renowned Dutch painter famed for his mastery in still life compositions. This exquisite painting, executed in 1643, is a quintessential example of Claesz’s ability to blend texture, light, and subtlety to evoke both the material and the transient.Titled "Still Life," this work captures an array of objects that together weave a narrative of both luxury and the brevity of life. The focal point of the piece is a sumptuous, cooked crab placed centrally on a pewter plate, its rich red and pink hues vivid against the muted background. To the left, a silver pitcher, polished to a reflective sheen, stands elegantly, accompanied by a partially filled glass of wine that catches light, emphasizing its delicate contents. On the table, various other objects complete the scene: a peeled lemon with its rind spirally trimmed, offering a striking contrast of textures and colors; a pocket watch, discreetly signalling the omnipresent passage of time, and a small oil lamp, its snuffed out flame possibly a nod to vanitas themes. The soft white of the tablecloth balances the composition, while a dark draped napkin adds a rigorous vertical element, contrasting with the horizontal layout of the table's contents.Through this painting, Claesz not only showcases his skill in depicting varied textures and effects of light on different surfaces but also invites viewers to ponder the deeper meanings possibly hidden within ordinary sights. This piece is not just a visual delight; it is a contemplation on life's fleeting moments and the quiet reminder of its inevitable passing.

Pieter Claesz was a Dutch Golden Age painter of still lifes.

He was born in Berchem, Belgium, near Antwerp, where he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke in 1620. He moved to Haarlem in 1620, where his son, the landscape painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem was born (October 1). He and Willem Claeszoon Heda, who also worked in Haarlem, were the most important exponents of the "ontbijt" or dinner piece.
