More about this artwork
"Ornament van schubben" (1878) by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita is a compelling example of artistic expression through simple yet rhythmic patterns. This piece presents a meticulous arrangement of scales, rendered with a striking contrast between black and white, creating an almost hypnotic optical effect. The design is segmented into tiers, with each row of scales gently overlapping the one below, akin to tiles on a roof or scales on a fish, illustrating the beauty in natural repetitive forms. The pattern starts with an orderly row of arches at the top, which transitions into teardrop-shaped elements that cascade down the composition. The precision in the artwork reflects de Mesquita’s dedication to detail and his ability to transform a simple motif into a visually intriguing pattern that balances complexity and serenity. This work not only showcases de Mesquita's skill in graphic design but also his profound understanding of how to manipulate shapes and contrast to captivate the viewer’s eye.
