More about this artwork

The painting "Madame Arthur Fontaine (Marie Escudier, born 1865)" crafted by Odilon Redon in 1901, encapsulates the artist's unique blend of Symbolism with an ethereal softness. This intimate portrait exhibits a woman clothed in a richly textured yellow dress, her attention fully absorbed by the document she holds. The soft, gentle outline of Madame Fontaine's figure contrasts dramatically with the vivid, detailed depiction of her attire, highlighting Redon’s mastery of both color and form. The background of the painting is a muted amalgamation of floral patterns and colors, blending seamlessly into the shadowy atmosphere that envelops her. This choice of muted, dreamlike background not only accentuates the subject's luminous attire but also draws the viewer's eyes to the intricate texture and delicate folds of her dress, adding a tactile dimension to the visual experience.Redon’s use of light and shadow plays a crucial role here; the face of Madame Fontaine is rendered almost indistinct, emphasizing her introspective mood and the overall enigmatic quality of the painting. This artwork is a celebration of quiet contemplation and the subtle interplay between reality and the artist’s impressionistic touch.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
