More about this artwork

The painting "Motocycles Comiot" created in 1899 by the acclaimed Swiss-French artist Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, is a vibrant portrayal of modernity and elegance intertwined with a hint of whimsy. As an exemplary piece of the Art Nouveau movement, this artwork seamlessly incorporates style and commercial appeal, showcasing Steinlen's finesse in illustration and poster art.At the forefront of the painting, a striking figure—a young woman dressed in chic, late 19th-century attire—dominates the composition. Adorned in a sophisticated black riding outfit complemented by a bright red blouse and gloves, she exudes an aura of confidence and forwardness. The yellow adorned hat and intricate scarf add a touch of refined style, capturing the artist's attention to detail and color harmony. The woman is depicted in the act of handling a large, early model of a motorcycle, a Comiot brand, symbolizing the technological advancements of the era and the burgeoning excitement for mechanized personal transport. The choice of a female figure prominently leading the interaction with technology also subtly comments on the evolving roles of women during this period. In the background, Steinlen adds a rustic scene filled with lively and somewhat comical geese, possibly startled or intrigued by the machine. This contrast between the modernity of the motorcycle and the traditional rural life illustrates the transition of the times and provides a narrative element that is both engaging and amusing.Located at the top and bottom of the painting are texts that highlight the brand "Motocycles Comiot" and its location in Paris, at "87 Boulevard Gouvion St-Cyr".

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker.

Born in Lausanne, Steinlen studied at the University of Lausanne before taking a job as a designer trainee at a textile mill in Mulhouse in eastern France. In his early twenties he was still developing his skills as a painter when he and his wife Emilie were encouraged by the painter François Bocion to move to the artistic community in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. Once there, Steinlen was befriended by the painter Adolphe Willette who introduced him to the artistic crowd at Le Chat Noir that led to his commissions to do poster art for the cabaret owner/entertainer, Aristide Bruant and other commercial enterprises.
