More about this artwork

Henry Ossawa Tanner's evocative painting, "Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Atherton Curtis with Still Life," masterfully captures the semblance and spirit of its subjects through nuanced expression and composition. In this poignant work, Tanner portrays the couple in a contemplative state, sitting beside a table adorned with a brightly colored still life arrangement of fruits. The rich, textured brushstrokes and the harmonious interplay of light and shadow imbue the scene with a deep, atmospheric quality.Mrs. Curtis is depicted with her head resting thoughtfully on her hand, gazing out with an expression that suggests introspection or perhaps distant observation. Mr. Curtis, sitting next to her, seems equally lost in thought, his gaze directed away from the viewer, adding to the painting's introspective mood. The still life on the table serves not only as a vibrant focal point but also adds a layer of domesticity and richness to the scene, suggesting a quiet moment shared between the couple in the privacy of their home. The background of deep blues and muted tones contrasts with the warmer hues of the couple's faces and the still life, creating a balanced composition that draws the viewer into this moment of private reflection. Tanner's use of color and light enhances the emotional depth and personal essence of the portrait, making it a captivating study of personality and domestic intimacy.

Henry Ossawa Tanner (June 21, 1859 – May 25, 1937) was an American artist who spent much of his career in France. He became the first African-American painter to gain international acclaim. Tanner moved to Paris, France, in 1891 to study at the Académie Julian and gained acclaim in French artistic circles. His painting Daniel in the Lions' Den (1895, location unknown) was accepted into the 1896 Salon, the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Tanner's Resurrection of Lazarus (1896, Musée d'Orsay, Paris) was purchased by the French government after winning the third-place medal at the 1897 Salon. In 1923, the French government elected Tanner chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
