More about this artwork

Discover the enigmatic charm of Odilon Redon's captivating lithograph, "Cheval aile" (Winged Horse), crafted in 1894. This artwork delves into the mystical and fantastical realms that are characteristic of Redon's unique approach to symbolism in art. The lithograph portrays an ethereal scene centered around a majestic winged horse, captured in a graceful yet powerful poise. The composition is rendered in a nuanced monochromatic palette, which adds to the dreamlike quality of the image. The horse, depicted with wings that suggest both delicacy and strength, appears to be emerging from darkness into light, symbolizing perhaps transcendence or enlightenment. The stark contrasts between the deep shadows and the highlighted contours of the horse amplify the dramatic and mystical atmosphere.Redon’s mastery in lithography is evident in his exquisite control of textures and shades, using the interplay between light and dark to evoke a sense of otherworldly beauty and mystery. "Cheval aile" is a quintessential reflection of the artist’s deep interest in the notion of the fantastical and the unseen world, inviting viewers to transcend the mundane and explore the deeper meanings of existence through his symbolic artistry. This remarkable piece not only highlights Redon’s skill as a lithographer but also offers a glimpse into his profound artistic vision, where mythical creatures are not mere figments of fantasy but are imbued with symbolic significance and deep emotional resonance.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
