More about this artwork

"Le char du Soleil" by Odilon Redon, painted in 1910, is a captivating work that plunges the viewer into a dreamlike interpretation of classical mythology. This enchanting painting displays the magnificent spectacle of the sun chariot, a subject drawn from the rich tapestry of myths surrounding the celestial journeys of the sun.At the very center of the composition, a trio of powerful white horses gallops fervently across the sky. These majestic creatures, rendered with dynamic energy and ethereal grace, symbolize the unstoppable passage of time and the inexorable motion of celestial bodies. Their wild expressions and the fluidity of their movement impart a sense of urgency and otherworldliness.Sky and earth blur into a delicate palette of muted colors, with the sky washed in soft blues, pinks, and violets, suggesting the break of dawn or the onset of dusk. To the right, a solitary figure in a chariot maneuvers these celestial steeds. This figure, likely representing a mythological deity associated with the sun or dawn, adds a human element to the cosmic spectacle, linking the limitless heavens with the mortal world. The sprawling mountain landscape beneath the flight of the horses enhances the atmospheric depth of the scene, cloaked in a haze that gives the painting a feeling of impermanence and mystery.Odilon Redon, renowned for his unique blend of symbolism and surrealism, uses his distinct style to encourage a sense of introspection and wonder. "Le char du Soleil" is not just a visual portrayal but an invitation to explore the deeper meanings of existence and the universal forces that guide it.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
