More about this artwork

Presented in an intriguing blend of soft delineation and tender detail, "Brunnhilde" by Odilon Redon, created in 1894, captures the ethereal and introspective essence of its subject. This exquisite lithograph reflects Redon's unique style, which often traverses the precarious line between dream and reality. In this portrait, the figure of Brunnhilde is rendered in profile, conveying a sense of noble tranquility. Her features are delicately outlined, with gentle shading adding a three-dimensional quality that brings her serene expression to life. Her hair flows back in wavy tresses, suggesting both grace and strength. This choice of hairstyle, combined with the soft floral patterns subtly present in the background, may symbolize purity and a deep connection with nature, themes often revisited in Symbolist art. This piece is particularly striking for its minimalist yet expressive execution. Redon's use of space and sparse but deliberate lines invites viewers to ponder Brunnhilde’s thoughts and emotions, drawing us into a quiet, contemplative dialogue with the figure. The understated elegance of the composition ensures that the focus remains on the subject's inner life, possibly reflecting the artist's introspection or the broader human condition. As we observe "Brunnhilde," we are encouraged to reflect on the deeper meanings that are often veiled beneath the surface of Redon's works, exploring themes of silence, meditation, and the metaphysical.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
