More about this artwork
Berthe Morisot's intimate painting, "Young Woman and Child" from 1894, is a vivid example of her mastery in capturing the essence of private moments with expressive brushstrokes and a rich palette. The painting features two main figures, a young woman and a child, engaged in a tender scene that unfolds within a softly colored domestic setting. The young woman, seated and slightly turned away from the viewer, exudes a sense of gentle deliberation as she helps the child with what appears to be a piece of red fabric. The child, whose face is showcased in profile, interacts with the material, suggesting moments of learning or play under the woman's careful guidance. The interaction carries an air of everyday simplicity, yet it is elevated by Morisot's skillful use of color and light.Morisot's brushwork is fluid and confident, creating textures and layers that make the scene pulse with life. The background, with its hints of a sculptural figure and draped curtains, melts into washes of color, focusing the viewer's attention on the warm interaction between the woman and the child. This painting not only reflects Morisot's focus on feminine and domestic life but also exemplifies her role as a pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
