More about this artwork

This enchanting painting by Berthe Morisot, a prominent figure in the Impressionist movement, captures a tender moment between the artist's daughter, Julie, and her nanny. The artwork reveals Morisot's mastery in portraying the intimate and domestic scenes of her personal life with a fresh and vibrant touch. In "The Artist’s Daughter, Julie, with her Nanny," we see young Julie depicted with a gentle expression, her gaze possibly fixed on something beyond the immediate surroundings, kindling the viewer's curiosity about her thoughts. The nanny, shown in profile, appears fully engaged in her duties, perhaps adjusting Julie’s cloak or attending to the child's comfort. Her posture and the bowed head suggest a moment of attentive care and affection toward Julie. The background of the painting is a lively, blurred representation of what appears to be a garden or park, providing a serene and light-filled setting that complements the subjects. Morisot's use of quick, fluid brushstrokes imbues the scene with a sense of immediacy and the fleeting nature of the moment, characteristics that are quintessentially Impressionist. This work is a beautiful example of Morisot's ability to combine her roles as an artist and a mother, bringing out the warmth and loving relationships within her family circle.

Landscapes and still life by French impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841–1895). She was celebrated for the feminine qualities of her paintings, intuitiveness, spontaneity and delicacy, and she often included her daughter Julie in her paintings. Berthe was married to the brother of Édouard Manet, and some say she was his muse, as she modeled in many of his paintings.
