More about this artwork

This intriguing work, titled "Femme à la torque ornée" (Woman with a Plumed Hat), was created by the French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon around 1900. In this delicate lithograph, Redon presents a captivating portrait of a woman rendered in a dreamlike and ethereal manner, a hallmark of his later works that often explored themes of fantasy and the subconscious. The subject of the painting is not an ordinary woman but a figure of allure and mystique. She is depicted with an elongated, serpentine body that gracefully twists and curves, merging human-like features with fantastical elements. Her upper body, dressed in a dark, form-fitting garment, contrasts with her lower body, which resembles a flowing tail, giving her an otherworldly appearance akin to a creature from myth. The woman's face draws particular attention with its sharp, yet refined features, and her eyes seem to gaze enigmatically beyond the viewer, inviting endless speculation about her thoughts or origins. Her ornate hat, adorned with plumes, adds a dramatic flair and heightens her mysterious aura. The background is minimally detailed, with soft, swirling lines that suggest movement and a sense of floating or drifting, reinforcing the surreal quality of the image.Odilon Redon's art frequently navigated the intersection between reality and imagination, and "Femme à la torque ornée" is a beautiful example of his skill in blending the two.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
