More about this artwork

French artist Odilon Redon, renowned for his unique blend of symbolism and early expressionism, presents an evocative portrayal in his lithograph titled 'Christ' from 1887. This artwork diverges from traditional religious art by offering a deeply introspective and psychological exploration of the figure of Christ. The piece features a close-up portrait of Christ, dominated by large, expressive eyes that seem to convey a profound emotional intensity. These eyes, drawing the viewer into a gaze that is both penetrating and vulnerable, are perhaps the most striking element of the work. Redon's use of monochromatic tones enhances the haunting and somber mood, focusing attention on the textures and contrasts between light and shadow.Christ's crown of thorns is depicted not just as a physical object but as a symbolic manifestation of suffering. The thorns bristle outward, adding a raw, tactile dimension to the pain and sacrifice represented. The overall composition is tight and focused, with the face filling the frame, which reflects a deeply personal and intimate encounter with the subject.Redon’s art often ventured into the realm of the unseen—dreams, visions, and the spiritual—making his representation of Christ not merely a religious icon, but a portal into the human psyche grappling with themes of suffering, redemption and the divine. This image is a striking example of how art can serve as a medium for profound spiritual and emotional expression.

Odilon Redon was a French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. Early in his career, both before and after fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he worked almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography, works referred to as noirs.

During the 1890s he began working in pastel and oils, which quickly became his favourite medium, abandoning his previous style of noirs completely after 1900. He also developed a keen interest in Hindu and Budhist religion and culture, which increasingly showed in his work.

He is perhaps best known today for the "dreamlike" paintings created in the first decade of the 20th century, which were heavily inspired by Japanese art and which, while continuing to take inspiration from nature, heavily flirted with abstraction. His work is considered a precursor to both Dadaism and Surrealism.
