More about this artwork

Camille Pissarro, an influential figure in both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, created "Le village à travers les arbres" around 1869. This alluring work of art allows a secretive peek into a tranquil village through a naturally framed window of towering trees. The trees themselves dominate the composition, their distinct, tall trunks leading eyes towards the leafy canopy above. Their branches and leaves are depicted with lively, energetic brushwork, suggesting the movement of foliage in the breeze. The background reveals glimpses of serene, modest houses nestled comfortably in the landscape, their existence barely visible through the dense thicket. A path meanders through the foreground, adding depth and guiding the viewer's journey into the scene. On this path, a solitary figure, rendered in modest detail, serves as a silent guide through this serene rural tableau. This painting is not just a visual feast; it invites contemplation about the relationship between man and nature. Pissarro's choice of perspective and his gentle, yet vivid portrayal of the scenery, displays his exceptional ability to capture both the quiet beauty of the French countryside and the ordinary lives within it.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
