More about this artwork
This tender and evocative painting by Camille Pissarro, titled "La Mère De L’artiste Au Lit" (The Artist’s Mother in Bed), captures a very personal moment through the delicate touch of the artist’s brush. The artwork features the artist’s mother lying in bed, her posture relaxed in a moment of rest or sleep. The surrounding colors blend seamlessly, with warm yellows and deep pinks enveloping her form, suggesting comfort and tranquility. What is particularly striking about this piece is Pissarro’s use of watercolors. The fluidity of this medium allows the colors to bleed into one another, creating a dreamlike effect that beautifully captures the intimate setting. Beside her bed, a small night table holds everyday objects like a candle and a cup, painted in colors that echo the chromatic theme of the bedding and background. This painting is not just a depiction but a son’s gentle homage to his mother, characterized by soft, ethereal embellishments. It gives us a glimpse into the quiet and domestic aspects of Pissarro’s life, showing a different facet of an artist known for his landscapes and rural scenes.

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing. — Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was born on St.Thomas (now the US Virgin Islands) to a Portuguese father and a Dominican mother. He went to Paris to study art at Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was an early pioneer of pointillism and neo-impressionism and later became a mentor of many famous impressionist painters including Cezanne, Manet, Renoir, and Gauguin. His paintings depicted rural and urban French landscapes and lifestyle. Many of his works politically captured images of peasants and laborers. Today, he is considered the father of impressionism.
