More about this artwork
This compelling portrait from Amedeo Modigliani, titled "Girl Standing in Black Pinafore," completed in 1918, is a striking example of his unique approach to portraiture. The painting captures the essence of a young girl dressed in a simple black pinafore dress, which profoundly contrasts with the lighter shades found in the background.Modigliani's signature style is evident through the elongated features of the girl, particularly her neck and face, which provide a sense of refined elegance and grace. Her gaze is direct and perhaps contemplative, meeting the viewer's eyes in a quietly engaging manner. The subdued color palette, dominated by shades of gray and black with hints of warmer tones in the background, adds to the introspective and serene mood of the artwork. This piece is a classic example of Modigliani's ability to convey deep emotion through minimalist yet expressive lines and forms. The figure is positioned against a backdrop that includes a hint of green and a warm chestnut cabinet, which subtly complements the central figure. The relatively straightforward composition draws attention to the facial expression and posture of the girl, which are rendered with a delicate sensitivity.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
