More about this artwork
Amedeo Modigliani's painting, "Young Man with a Cap" from the early 20th century, captures the distinct style and emotional depth that the Italian painter is renowned for. The portrait features a young man, his face characterized by Modigliani's signature elongated, slender features, including the neck and face. The subject's pale skin contrasts sharply with the dark tones of his clothing and the rich, warm background hues, which suggest an interior setting. The young man wears a cap, tilted slightly on his head, adding a casual and somewhat introspective aura to his demeanor. His eyes, rendered as simplistic, almond-shaped blanks, evoke a sense of enigma and distance, inviting viewers to ponder the thoughts hidden behind his impassive expression. The use of color and the fluid, confident brushstrokes contribute to the overall poise and subtlety of the composition, making this painting not only a study of character but also a reflection of Modigliani's unique artistic vision.

Born in Livorno, Italy, Modigliani (1884-1920) later moved to Paris in 1906. There he was acquainted with many great artists including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Constantin Brancusi. Inspired by the artworks of Edvard Munch, Paul Cézanne, and Toulouse Lautrec, Modigliani has developed his signature style: portraits and sensual nudes with long, simplified forms, and elongated mask-like faces featuring eyes with no pupils.
